Lessons from Lehonti

Have you heard of Lehonti?

See Alma 47 in the Book of Mormon. Lehonti and his followers set up a stronghold on a mountain to protect themselves from their enemies. This position gave them a strategic advantage and helped them maintain control over their territory.

A wicked leader named Amalickiah asked Lehonti multiple times to come down from the mountain to talk. Lehonti reluctantly gave in.

Amalickiah’s plan was to poison Lehonti gradually and imperceptibly. It worked; Lehonti died from the gradual poisoning.

With Lehonti out of the way, Amalickiah was able to consolidate power and further his own ambitions.

In summary, Lehonti’s descent from the mountain—both literal and metaphorical—serves as a powerful reminder of how gradual, seemingly small decisions can lead to significant consequences. It’s a cautionary tale about the dangers of incremental compromise and the importance of maintaining vigilance and adherence to one’s core values.

What does Lehonti’s story have to do with you?

  • Satan makes it seem that sin will be safe, but there are always consequences to our choices. Seek help to eliminate your temporary crisis (money, housing, etc.), not your child.

  • Lehonti was killed “by degrees” (Alma 47:18). You are faced with messages that seem safe and alluring, such as the unborn child in your womb is only a “clump of cells” and that abortion is not a big deal. (Psssssst, we are all “clumps of cells”!)

  • You can protect your unborn child by strategizing with loved ones and leaders on how you will do this. What support do you and your unborn child need? Will you raise the child? Is adoption a better option?

  • Think about the methods used in abortion. Like Amalickiah having someone administer poison to Lehonti, one abortion method is to administer poison to your unborn child.

  • Don’t fall for people who want to manipulate you by luring you “down the mountain” to abort your child and grab your money.

Take a deep breath.

Don’t compromise your values.

Seek help from loved ones and your Heavenly Father!
